Life is constantly changing and full of uncertainty. When I painted this, I was contemplating surfing as a metaphor for life - taking the waves as they come, trying to pick the best ones, and sometimes getting massively tumbled. It’s a reminder that we are naturally buoyant and can ride whatever life brings if we keep going.

Joy is an act of Resistance. Originally the title of a poem by Black poet Toi Derricotte, this idea has been embraced and repeated by activists and dreamers of all kinds. Joy and sorrow are inseparable, and it sometimes takes a period of sorrow for me to remember joy. This painting sat on my easel for many months, waiting for me. I didn’t know where it wanted to go. I was finally able to finish it after finding a small feather in my neighborhood, which I incorporated into the painting. The feather whispered, “remember joy,” and the painting came to life through that reminder. Joy is part of our nature, and two of the best reminders of joy for me are nature and music, which are both represented here.

Walking through the deep dark forest of life. Following bread crumbs. Listening to the silence. Bumping into things. Encountering wonder and awe. Seeing and not seeing. Getting lost ….. the path is everywhere, so can one ever truly be lost? Feeling, finding, letting go. Making friends along the way. Learning to love. The journey is the destination.

I painted this after Roe v. Wade was overturned as a way to process my anger, grief and fear. The patriarchy has always tried to control the womb, as it represents woman’s original power. This primal power cannot be controlled or owned by anyone other than the person with the womb. This piece celebrates the feminine powers of creativity, healing, wisdom, prosperity, mother nature, originality, magic, sexuality, freedom, rebirth, pleasure, peace, embodiment, joy, beauty and growth.

I AM SOVEREIGN UNTO MYSELF. MY BODILY AUTONOMY IS NON-NEGOTIABLE. Mother earth as a Black/Brown body. The Divine Feminine in her many forms - power, earthiness, life force, sexuality, wisdom, healing, wholeness. Safety. Birth. Radical self love. Queer love. The body is not an apology. Divinity is implied. I am large, I contain multitudes.

Ancient wisdom creates future hope. Indigenous and African elders remind us of truth. Eyes that see in the dark. Seeing both shadow and light, wounds and miracles, injustice and restoration. Be brave enough to see deeply and know what you know. The effects of love are maximal and your love is needed.
